On Wednesday, 30th of January 2024, we hosted an enterprise networking event, ‘Unlocking The Business Finance Landscape, ’ a partnership with the British Business Bank at the Metrobank in Bristol City Centre. The event aimed to explore finance options, build networks, and directly engage with investors.
Attendees were welcomed into the venue with refreshments by Derek Tanner, our Enterprise Development Manager and Event Chair, who shared the challenges of accessing finance and the potential benefits that could be unlocked if Black and Minoritised businesses had proper access. Before immersing themselves in the enriching workshops, participants had the opportunity to network with others. They were then divided into small rotating groups within the ‘Meet the Expert’ workshops, where they engaged with representatives from Angel Investors Bristol, Purple Shoots, BBRC (Bristol & Bath Regional Capital), and SWIG Finance.
Angel Investors Bristol, a notable player in the Bristol and South West ecosystem, focused on supporting early-stage innovative businesses with funding. Purple Shoots, a not-for-profit microfinance organisation, addressed unemployment and economic challenges through small loans and business development. BBRC emphasised the impact of investment in real estate, infrastructure, and businesses for positive outcomes in the South West. SWIG Finance, a not-for-profit social enterprise, offered various funding options, including the South West Investment Fund and business loans, contributing significantly to the local economy. The insights provided by these organisations were invaluable in exploring diverse avenues for business growth and development.
Guests then transitioned into an incredible panel discussion led by Derek Tanner and distinguished panellists: Clayton Planter, Founder of Street 2 Boardroom CIC, Marti Burgess, our Board Chair and Partner in the Corporate team at Knights PLC, Mo Rashid, a Member of our Board and Creative Youth Network; and Kalpna Woolf, a major influencer for change in the region and Founder of BeOnBoard. The discussion delved into the significance of authentic networking, breaking limitations, and recognising the proven business acumen within racialised communities. When asked about what the panellists want investors in the room to know, Mo Rashid had this to say:
The shared insights were crafted to inspire and empower the audience, fostering unity, financial understanding, and encouragement in the pursuit of entrepreneurial goals. This was followed by a Q&A session and a delicious spread of East African light bites provided by Jikoni East Africa.
We extend our thanks to Jikoni for providing delicious food at our event. Our appreciation goes to our partner, the British Business Bank, workshop facilitators, panellists, dedicated team, and Metro Bank for hosting. The insightful workshops, thought-provoking panel discussion, and interactive Q&A were thoroughly enjoyed by all and provided new learning on how to access funding.
